5th - 6th Grades


Let's make math meaningful and understandable. Students will participate in group activities and games that help facilitate understanding. Each student will make and use their own math interactive notebook to dig deeper and create a lasting reference of all the concepts learned. Standards will be covered for 6th grade math, including a portion of 5thgrade. Topics include: ratios, unit rates, real-life problems, percents, unit pricing, quotients of fractions, decimal operations, GCF, LCM, negative numbers, coordinate plane, ordered pairs, absolute value, exponents, one-variable equations and inequalities, area of triangles and polygons, volume of prisms, 3D figures, data distribution, statistical variability, histograms, plots, and data sets. Class is geared towards 6th graders and advanced 5th graders. Homework will reflect the practice students do at home. Students can use any math curriculum of choice. In class assignments and tests will be graded.

Instructor Biography

Jane Ternavsky has been homeschooling her children for the past five years. Prior to that she worked in the Engineering Design and Construction industry, as well as tutored students in mathematics and physics from Kindergarten to University level. She holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering.
