3rd - 5th Grades




Rich with discovery and exploration to settlement and statehood, California’s history is alive with the stories Spanish, Portuguese, English and Russian seafarers and explorers in addition to American pioneers.

We will dive into history with the Gold Rush, the Pony Express, Transcontinental Railroad and Missions. Using a "living books" approach with literature as well as exerts from literature will guide us through the lives of early Californians.

Keeping a student notebook to include study notes and a timeline will guide us chronologically through the growth of California. Working through comprehension questions, discussions, vocabulary, map work, literary elements as well as art. As a class, we will memorize a few poems on the history of California.  

All materials are included in the course fee.

A composition book (white space for pictures/drawings and writing space below) will be required for each class meeting. We will be using literature to enhance our learning throughout the year. A class syllabus with a list of our literature books will be sent out in August. I am looking forward to exploring with your children!
